Ummm, would anyone object to doing an actual poll with vote counts (and comments could still be posted), or was there particular thinking behind just making it an open comment thing only?

We were just thinking for everyone's vote to be written down somewhere, while chatting, so it was an easy quickie. After the chat, though, we seem to have a lot of people for PA on Labor Day |

I'd go with PA becouse that will probably be the closest location to VA. The later the better for me because I'm in the middle of a move right now but if it goes down on Labor Day weekend I will make every effort to be there. |

My vote's for PA, but I can't make it Labor Day. I'd need late September or October. |

I guess I'll vote for PA and Laber Day weekend. Sounds like a great spot.
...though I like the thought of Duluth, as I grew up near there.
I'll be driving all the way from Florida. |

Jason, there aren't any weird rules you'll be having us abide to are there? Restrictions? Cult initiations?

It might be prudent to have guests sign a waiver of all their rights, a hold harmless clause, or some other "cover your ass" legalese.
And having more than just one person (me) bringing some fire suppression equipment can't hurt, either (swipe a fire bottle from your office for the weekend).

PA sounds good to me. It's about 5 hours away from me, but it's certainly closer than Ohio. Maybe this could be my first road trip. :D But I'll be bringing mace, just in case y'all change your mind on that virgin sacrifice. 8O |

I went up to the cabin this weekend. I haven't been up there in a while, and it turns out quite a few things have changed, so I have to issue a few errata:
1. No stove, and it looks like all the propane stuff has been taken down. We do have a small refridgerator and a microwave, not to mention the fire. Which is still a microwave and small refrigerator better than you'd get at the average campsite.
2. There's a TV up there now hooked up with a DVD player. We watched "Outfoxed." Though I think it would be much more interesting to do what we did with "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"--throw a blanket on the side of the cabin, and use a laptop & projector to make a little theater.
3. The toilet does flush now.
4. There are 8 interior beds, not 10.
While I was up there, I took some photos so you can see what we're talking about. Yes, they're very blurry, I was barely able to stand when I took these, much less hold a camera steady. These are just to give you an idea of the place.
Space: [ 1, 2, 3, 4 ] Fire area: [ 1 ] Bedrooms: [ 1, 2 ] Bathroom: [ 1 ] Living room: [ 1 ] Kitchen: [ 1, 2 ]
Mind you for all its amenities, it's still a trailer in the middle of the forest. Saturday night we found a bat (that was fun), and in the past we've had mice get in, so you're not totally free of the danger of encountering some sort of rodent at night. Though, it's distinctly less likely inside than out. |

Looks great Jay. I'm just wondering though, we are still planning to collectively "rough it" for the most part, right? Like, the trailor is there as part of a fail safe right? As far as toilets in old trailors go, my family has one down in Tennessee, and I'll tell you what, that thing would not be able to handle 10 or 15 plus people using it for 3 days straight. (but if a girl needs some damn privacy for a freakin minute, thats another thing!)
I'm planning on sleeping in a tent btw, that is unless there are big foot or crazy storms. |

Thanks for the pix, Jason. Here's some odds & ends I've been thinking about...
Looks like plenty of room for tents. Just out of curiosity, it looks as if the grounds are maintained (cut grass) by someone - somehow I was under the impression that the land was "untamed", or "unimproved". Is there a chance that someone else might show up (guests, family, mower crew) while we're there - meaning, do we need to "book" our weekend or something?
I presume you're hooked into the electric utility grid - meaning, is there any need for me to bring portable PV power (i.e. the rig I brought to IshCon?).
As a solar oven is too small and slow for the meals we will need to prepare, I've picked up four pounds (four small green canisters) of propane for folks with portable camping stoves. I've just got a simple 1 burner deal that screws to the top of a canister - not something you'd place a large skillet or pot on, however.
I'm going to try to borrow a solar shower bag - although that isn't going to be much help for more than a few folks (sun dependent, too) - should anyone desire such a thing...
As we are in America, I'm presuming ice (for coolers/refrigeration) is available nearby (gas station, grocery store, whatever) and probably firewood, as well.
I think we need to establish some sort of registration process, so that we can get a firm count on attendees. Perhaps request a small fee that we can pool for reimbursing common expenses or the like?

Yes. Like you mention, if everyone tries to cram in, we'll have problems. The trailer's there for those whose ideas of "roughing it" are less rough than others'.

It's already "booked," so to speak. The maintenance is done by my family--often including myself, I'm sorry to say. But we usually do that every other weekend, and I've already talked to them about this. So, if this is the place we're going to do it, then whenever we're up there will be one of the "off" weeks. No need for wrangling with reservations or worrying about interruptions; that's all taken care of.
I presume you're hooked into the electric utility grid - meaning, is there any need for me to bring portable PV power (i.e. the rig I brought to IshCon?).
I would highly recommend it, actually. There's some power, but for the number of people going up there, we'd likely fry it out if we tried to rely on that alone.
As we are in America, I'm presuming ice (for coolers/refrigeration) is available nearby (gas station, grocery store, whatever) and probably firewood, as well.
I've never paid for firewood. I mean, look at the place! We've got a pretty good stock up there to start with. But yes, there are people who actually sell the stuff. In a forest full of fallen-down logs, they're selling firewood. Sheesh.
And yes, there are plenty of places to get ice, too. A quick run down to Marienville is all we'll probably need.
I think we need to establish some sort of registration process, so that we can get a firm count on attendees. Perhaps request a small fee that we can pool for reimbursing common expenses or the like?
Not to mention that there are some costs I'll probably be incurring, not to mention some insurance in case we like burn the place down or something. I was thinking something like $10 a head would be a fair sum. |

That said, it's probably also sufficient to "collect at the door," so to speak. Though, we'll definately want to whip up a registration process to get a better idea of the group we're getting. |

Yeah, the trailer's definitely not going to support all the people who will likely be there for 3 days. So if the Fall Ishcon is held there (which it's looking like it will be) expect to spend most of your time outside.
Just out of curiosity, it looks as if the grounds are maintained (cut grass) by someone - somehow I was under the impression that the land was "untamed", or "unimproved". No, we don't need to book it, and there won't be anybody else showing up to take care of the place. We always cut the grass whenever we go up. Those pictures were taken after we had cut it. I'm not sure how much maintenance would be done prior to the IshCon, though. I really can't see us having the time to do any significant grass cutting the weekend of, so the closest we might do it is the weekend before. In other words, the grass could be anywhere between freshly mowed and knee high. Something to consider if that's a problem for anybody.
I presume you're hooked into the electric utility grid - meaning, is there any need for me to bring portable PV power (i.e. the rig I brought to IshCon?).
We do have electricity inside the trailer, but again the trailer's capacity is limited. I don't know how much power you're going need. We do have a few free outlets and some extension cord. If you think you're going to need more than that it might not be a bad idea to bring whatever power sources you have.
As we are in America, I'm presuming ice (for coolers/refrigeration) is available nearby (gas station, grocery store, whatever) and probably firewood, as well.
Brookeville and Marienville are both just a short drive away. You should be able to stock up on whatever you need in either of those places. As for firewood--well, it's in a forest.
I think we need to establish some sort of registration process, so that we can get a firm count on attendees. Perhaps request a small fee that we can pool for reimbursing common expenses or the like?
Definitely. But that will all be worked out after we have final confirmation on the location.

Well, looks like the voting was overwhelmingly for PA on Labor Day weekend. I know it wasn't the most democratic voting system, but when there's practically consensus, who need democracy? heh...
Chris is away from the computer for a bit, but Eric knows a little bit about working with the Web site, so feel free to bug him to get something of a registration form going -- BUMP!
When we have registration, and the period will have to be brief (we have little over a month to plan this campout!!!), we can figure out more details, together.
As a minimalist, I hope I can help bring down the costs and help us stick to the essentials, and what's essential is up to the group that is coming. With a large fire pit like in the photo, we should be able to do some fine cookin', and there's lots of room for all of us, I see.
Things to keep in mind and to look around your house for -- THings to carry water in, Large tarps in case of rain -- we can make a tarp for the whole campsite if we have enough! Look for large cooking pots and utensils.
Actually wach for a very suggestive "stuff to bring list" soon!
Okay, gosh, so many details, so little time.... ~TonyZ |
